Trip Overview

Residing in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas in the Nepal-China border just 8 kilometers towards the west of Mt. Everest, Mt Pumori is one of the most promising 7000er peaks to any aspiring Himalayan Alpinist. Named by George Mallory as 'the mountain daughter' derived from Sherpa language where 'pumo' means 'young girl' and Ri means 'mountain'. A perfect choice of mountain for those preparing for 8000ers, Mt Pumori demands a high level of physical endurance and mountaineering experience. Climbers prefer the South East route for the Pumori expedition. However, the risk of avalanche always prevails during the climb.

The first successful ascent to this stunning peak was made in 1962 by Gerhard Lesner from a German-Swiss expedition team. Since then, numerous summits have been made but the first winter ascent to Pumori was only made in 2017 by Ali Sadpara from Pakistan.

The Pumori expedition starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and then trekking through beautiful villages in Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep. The trek allows is to experience the rural and local lifestyle of Sherpas. We get to pass through picturesque villages with terraced farmlands, dense forests of Rhododendron and Pine slowly rising towards rocky landscapes with no vegetation. We finally reach the base camp where we prepare for the climb.

The climb to Mt. Pumori requires traversing many snow-covered ridges and climbing across numerous glaciers. At times, climbers need to climb over slopes rising about 40-60 degrees, which is very technical and requires proper mountaineering experience.

Due to the technicalities involved, several camps will be established before actually pushing for the Summit. The base camp is established at 5300m followed by Camp I at 5650 m. Then, ascending on 40-60 degrees slopes we reach Camp II at 6200 m. Further, walking on more ice and snow, we will rest at Camp III at 6500 m before heading to the Summit at 7,161m. Our highly experienced Sherpas will set up fixed ropes and routes to help you ascend and descend easily. Our food and accommodations are top-notch making every moment of your travel worth it.

The summit of Pumori showcases an amazing panoramic view of Mt Everest, Mt Lhotse, Mt Nuptse, Mt Cho Oyu, Mt Makalu, and many other snow-capped peaks. As we start early in the morning, we may be lucky enough to witness the glorious sunrise that lightens up the white snow into golden making the scene unreal.

The best season to go on an expedition to Mt. Pumori is Spring ( March-June) and Autumn (August-November)

Trip Itinerary

DAY

1

Arrival In Kathmandu And Transfer To The Hotel

Upon your arrival at the TIA, you will need to fulfill some official procedures to obtain the Nepal Entry Visa at the Immigration counter. One of our representatives will be waiting to welcome you at the Arrivals. After meet and greet, you will be transferred to the hotel booked for you to rest. There you can freshen up and rest.

Official Formalities And Documentation

On the second day, we will fulfill all our official procedures including necessary documentation, obtaining permits, and other formalities needed for our expedition. Then you will have time for sightseeing around the city.

The next day, we will start our preparation for our expedition. We will now pack our bags, do some necessary shopping, re-check everything that we need (Especially medicines and essentials). Briefings will be made about every aspect of the expedition and all gears and equipment, trip duration, accommodation, facilities at the base camp, and all related to the expedition. It is also an opportunity for you to communicate and introduce yourself to your fellow climbers and teammates.

Fly To Lukla And Trek To Phakding (2610 M)

After an amazing breakfast, we will take a thrilling flight to Lukla Airport early in the morning. The flight gives you a bird’s eye view of the valleys, rivers, hills, and gradually mountain ranges. Even though the flight is only for half an hour, it does not fail to mesmerize you now and then. As we land at Lukla Airport, which is already exciting, we start our trek to Phakding, our destination for the day. After obtaining the permit for the region, we will slowly move through the settlements on a mixed trail of dirt, stone pathways, and some rocky sections at times. This is an easy start, so make sure to enjoy all the greeneries, floras, and faunas as you walk. The trail takes you over several suspension bridges and along the Dudh Koshi river. Enjoy the rest of the day at Phakding.

Trek To Namche And Acclimatize (3,440 M)

After Phakding, we move towards another beautiful destination, Namche Bazaar, which is the commercial point of the Khumbu region. Passing through the dense luscious forests of pine, juniper, Rhododendron, looking out for animals in the Sagarmatha National Park, climbing the stairs, enjoying the rages of rivers at some points, and mostly walking uphills are the major activities of the day’s trek. This trek will be long and tiring as we start gaining significant elevation. As we reach Namche, we rest at our hotel and enjoy our dinner. The next day, we will go around the village area and experience some local sherpa culture. We can also visit the Everest Photo Gallery and the Sherpa Museum while in Namche.

Trek To Tengboche (3,860 M)

After a day’s rest and acclimatization at Namche, we then approach one of the most beautiful and tranquil parts of this Expedition, the Tengboche monastery. Tengboche monastery is one of the most popular monasteries among Buddhists around the world. The views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam are visible towards the north while Thamserku and Kangtega stand towards the south with striking views. We will also join in some prayer ceremonies and rest for the day.

Trek To Dingboche And Acclimatize (4410 M)

After spending our night in Tengboche, we start our trek towards Dingboche where we will stay for the next day to acclimate ourselves. Following the path down from Tengboche towards Deboche through the forests of Rhododendrons, we cross a bridge over the raging Imja river. Then we gradually climb uphill to reach the village of Lower Pangboche where we can witness the spectacular views of Ama Dablam. We then move across the valley to reach our destination Dingboche at the start of the Imja Tse valley after an approximate walk of 5-6 hours. We spend our next day here to acclimate ourselves. We go on short hikes around the area to get some striking views of the mountain grandeur.

Trek To Lobuche (4910 M)

After acclimatizing in Dingboche, we head towards another beautiful stop, Lobuche. The journey starts with a climb to the ridge behind Periche until the tea houses at Dughla followed by a steep ascent to the terminal moraine of Khumbu Glacier. You will encounter a series of stone monuments made in the memories of climbers who couldn’t make it back home. After walking for almost 6-7 hours on rugged terrain we reach Lobuche, a small settlement of Sherpas. It is the final village with lodges on this trail to Everest.

Trek To Pumori Base Camp (5300 M)

From Lobuche, we resume our trek towards Mt. Pumori. We walk slowly and steadily so that we do not get altitude sickness. Walking on the rocky and rugged path, we finally reach the base camp at 5300 m where our Sherpa Guides and staff will set up all tents including sleeping tents, dining tents, shower tents, and will serve freshly prepared highly nutritious high mountain food.

Climbing Period Of Mt. Pumori

After preparation and prayer ceremony at the Base Camp at 5300m, we will start our climb to Camp I. Our Sherpa Guides will fix the ropes on the route and will set up higher camps.

Camp I will be set up at an altitude of 5,650 m while Camp II will be set up at 6000 m right at the ridge after the phase. Then, to make the summit push easier, we will set up our Camp III at 6,500 m. On the day of the summit push, we start early so that we exploit the opportunity to witness the glorious sunrise behind the giant white peaks. The top of Mt. Pumori gives and exceptional panoramic views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt Makalu, Ama Dablam, Lobuche Peak, Mt. Cho Oyu, and many other snow-capped peaks.

After some time of amazement, we retrace our path back to lower camps.

Trek Back To Pheriche

After cleaning up the base camp and packing up all our stuff, we trek back to Pheriche and stay overnight at a lodge.

From Pheriche, we trek back to Namche, the Sherpa capital of the Khumbu Region.

Trek Back To Lukla

We retrace the same trail back to Lukla from Namche. Going down through the dense forests, crossing several suspension bridges, and traversing through beautiful settlements will lead us to Lukla.

Fly To Kathmandu, Explore The City

From Lukla, we will take a flight back to Kathmandu viewing all those mountain vistas, packed villages, green forests from a bird’s eye perspective. We will then transfer you to the hotel for you to rest and relax. We will see you in the evening for a farewell dinner at a typical Nepali Restaurant with cultural shows.

Final Departure

With gratitude and best wishes, we will have to bid you farewell for your flight back home. We hope to see you soon in the next season for a brand new adventure. One of our representatives will drop you off at the airport 3 hours prior your scheduled departure.
