Manaslu Expedition Autumn 2026 Season Closed
The 2026 Manaslu expedition season has officially concluded. As our teams return safely to Kathmandu, 8K Expeditions extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who made this journey possible including our international climbers, Sherpa teams, guides, rope-fixing team, kitchen staff, porters, logistics crews and support teams.
This was a demanding season marked by challenging mountain conditions, limited weather windows and difficult decisions. Although our climbing members did not reach the summit, the expedition reinforced the values that define responsible high-altitude mountaineering: thorough preparation, teamwork, discipline and sound decision-making.
480 Manaslu Climbing Permits Issued in 2026
Manaslu remained one of Nepal’s busiest 8,000-metre peaks this autumn. A total of 480 climbing permits were issued for Manaslu in 2026, bringing a large number of climbers and expedition teams to the mountain.
8K Expeditions was proud to operate the largest expedition group on Manaslu this season, with three expedition teams bringing together 58 international climbers.
From the beginning of the expedition, our teams maintained a strong focus on preparation, acclimatization, mountain safety and professional expedition management.
Summit Route Successfully Fixed and Opened
One of the major achievements of the 2026 season was the successful completion of the summit-route fixing operation.
After a technically demanding effort in extremely challenging conditions, our dedicated rope-fixing team established and secured the route. The summit route was officially fixed and opened on 17 September 2026.
This important work required determination, technical expertise and close coordination among our Sherpa climbing leaders and support teams. Their contribution was essential in preparing the mountain for summit attempts.
Challenging Conditions and Limited Summit Opportunities
Despite the route being opened, conditions on Manaslu remained highly challenging throughout the season. Weather windows became increasingly limited, while conditions on the upper mountain continued to deteriorate. Unstable weather, difficult route conditions and rising objective risks made summit attempts increasingly hazardous.
Our climbers had prepared extensively and remained determined to reach the summit. However, the mountain did not provide a sufficiently safe and suitable opportunity for further attempts.There were no successful climber summits from the 8K Expeditions climbing teams this season, apart from the rope-fixing team’s successful completion of its route-fixing work.
Safety Comes Before the Summit
After carefully assessing the weather, route conditions and overall risk, expedition operators made the difficult decision to withdraw their teams and close the Manaslu operation.
Under the leadership of Lakpa Sherpa, 8K Expeditions was guided by one fundamental principle
No summit is more important than the safety of our climbers, Sherpas, guides and support teams.
An 8,000-metre expedition requires ambition and determination, but responsible mountaineering also means recognizing when conditions have exceeded an acceptable risk threshold. When the mountain no longer offers a reasonable margin of safety, turning around is the responsible decision.

The Journey Continues
With the Manaslu operation now closed, our international teams have returned safely to Kathmandu. Our expedition teams are already preparing for upcoming Himalayan operations, including Dhaulagiri, Himlung Himal, Ama Dablam and other 6,000-metrepeaks.
The Manaslu season may be over, but the journey continues.
