Carstensz Pyramid

Carstensz Pyramid is the highest peak in Indonesia in Oceania. It is popular as the highest peak on an island with an elevation of 4,884 m.  It is also the highest point between the Himalayas and the Andes. It is locally known as Puncak Jaya meaning Glorious Peak in the Indonesian language, while the peak is also known as Nemangkawi in Amungkal, a trans-New Guinea language. 

 

The first ascent to this peak was made in  1962 by Heinrich Harrer, Philip Temple, Russell Kippax, and Albertus Huizenga.
