Trip Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek through the famous Annapurna Circuit is a less trodden but stunningly adventurous trip that trekkers can experience. Upper Mustang, popularly known as “The Forbidden Kingdom” is a marvelous destination for trekking in the treeless landscape below 5000 meters. This exquisite place lies in the northern part of the Mustang district of Nepal elevating 3,840m which presents some breathtaking views of Annapurna, Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and many more mountains. The route to The Annapurna Range was officially permitted in 1977 and The Upper Mustang in 1992. Since then numerous adventurers have been following the Annapurna Circuit-Upper Mustang trail experiencing unharmed natural beauty and diversified Hindu-Buddhist culture throughout the journey.

The trek vigorously offers the hidden beauty of Manang: The Land Beyond the Mountains, like  Thorung Phedi, Muktinath Temple, Lo Manthang Municipality (3730m) of northwest Mustang, and several monasteries including Chode Gompa, Choprang Gompa, The Royal Palace, and The Monastic Museum. Upper Mustang is historically abundant in Tibetan culture, language, caves, and rock paintings. The place serves itself as a testimonial manifestation of a legendary king, Lo, and some prominent events during his regime in the 8th century as it is also known as “The Kingdom of Lo” till now. It was a restricted site till 1992 and was identified as The Forbidden Kingdom marking one of the most protected places in the world.

Trekking to the Upper Mustang region through The Annapurna is believed to be sturdy in terms of its elevation. An excellent level of fitness is demanded to accomplish higher altitudes. The hardest part of the trek is considered to be Thorung Phedi (4420m) as it is the highest elevation you’ll climb during this trek. However, trekkers can relish the journey with some remarkable views that it offers which eases in comforting altitude problems.

Best Seasons to Trek to Upper Mustang via Annapurna Circuit

Similar to Everest, the best season to trek in the Annapurna and Upper Mustang Region are autumn {September-November) and spring ((March-April) as the weather during these seasons are particularly clear and dry. If anyone desires to cherish the fully-bloomed rhododendrons and behold a remarkable Tibetan festival Tiji, they must choose to travel in the month or early March.

After spending an elaborate night, we will start to explore Lo Manthang, a glorious village carrying great history and culture from ancient times, and celebrate the Tiji festival with the natives which starts in mid-May and last for three days every year. “Tiji” is the short name of the Tibetan word “Tempa Chirim”which refers to World Peace. The festival is a mythical felicitation of an ancient Tibetan myth about a son who was obliged to save the kingdom of Mustang from destruction. The festival also honors the glory of Lord Buddha’s incarnation, Dorjee Sonnu over a demon called Mam Tam Ru who viciously fed on humans and caused droughts.

The monks of Cheodhe Monastery perform ceremonial dances during the celebration. On the first day, monks perform a dance called “Tsa Chham” which depicts the exploitation of Ma Tam Ru on the humans. The birth of Dorjee Sonnu, an incarnation of Lord Buddha as the demon’s son is performed marked “Nga Chham” on the second day. Finally, the return of the Ma Tam Ru to Lord Buddha’s world is enacted on the final day. All the dances and acts are mainly organized by Cheodhe Monastery which represents the Sakya sect of Buddhism.
