Trip Overview

Nuptse (7,861 m), meaning “the West Peak” in the Tibetan language actually lies in the Westernmost part of the Lobuche-Nuptse massif. Towering in the Khumbu region, Nuptse is only 2 km away towards the west-southwest from the legendary Mt. Everest and Mt Lhotse. Due to the appealing height and proximity to Everest and Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse is climbed as a part of ‘the Triple Crown’ by mountaineers.

Nuptse offers a dramatic view when observed from the South or Westside. Although it has an impressive height of 7861m, it is not ranked in the list of highest mountains because of its low prominence which is only (319 m). However, the seven significant peaks crowning in the long east-west trending ridge are certainly worthy of attention.

The first ascent to Nuptse was made by Dennis Davis and Tashi Sherpa in 1961, the members of the British Expedition team led by Joe Walmsley. They followed the north-ridge route popularly known as the Scott Route as of now.

Nuptse is a demanding and technical climb as the loose snow with hollows at some sections, loosely hanging cornices of snow and steep slopes before reaching the Summit make it extremely dangerous. The joint British/Nepalese expedition team fell off the final couloir during their ascent in 1975. While there were only two summits between 1961 to 1996, the frequency of climbing upsurge between the 1990s and 2000s with discoveries of routes from the South, West, and North Faces.

A high level of physical fitness and mountaineering skills is required if you want to go on an Expedition to Nuptse. Acclimatization and carefulness is the key to a successful summit of Nuptse.

Upon our arrival at the base camp set up at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall, our Sherpa Team will establish a route with ropes and ladders that leads to Camp 1 and Camp 2. This setup is beneficial for ladder training and getting acquainted with the gears before climbing up to Camp1 at 5900 m. We will then spend a night at camp 1 and touch Camp 2 at 6400 m and return to the base camp. We will conduct multiple rotations to Camp 1 and Camp 2 in this course. Later, we will climb up to Camp 2 and rest for a few nights for acclimatization before heading to Camp 3 at 6800 m.

As we touch Camp 3, we will return to Base Camp and conduct one more rotation to sleep at Camp 3.  Then we return to Base Camp to await a weather window perfect for Summit Bid. When the weather is favorable, we head to Camp 2 to spend a couple of nights followed by a night's sleep at Camp 3. The next day will be the Summit Day of Nuptse at 7861 m.  After the summit, we will then descend back to Camp 2. After a night’s rest at Camp 2, we will descend back to the base camp.

Best Season to go on Nuptse Expedition

The best season to go on an Expedition to Nuptse is between March to May and September to December when winds are calmer, the days are sunny, temperatures are mild and the trail is gorgeous with green dense forests, raging rivers and streams, the soothing sounds of the birds and animals and the uninterrupted views of the grand massifs throughout the trail.

Trek From Namche Bazaar To Tengboche (3867m)

After acclimatizing at Namche, we set our feet on the trail towards Khumjung valley, also called the green valley because of its dense vegetation. We follow the rocky pathways, steep uphills, rugged terrain, and most importantly enjoy the glimpses of the mountains at a distance throughout.

After Khumjung, we then approach the most beautiful and tranquil part of this Trek, the Tengboche monastery. This trail is a mix of smooth up and downhill paths with a steep uphill climb through the forests before we reach Tengboche. If we got lucky, we may even be able to spot some musk deer, a herd of Himalayan Thar, and pheasants along our way.

Tengboche monastery is one of the most popular monasteries among Buddhists around the world. The views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam are visible towards the north while Thamserku and Kangtega stand towards the south with striking views. Trek From Dingboche To Lobuche (4930 M)

After acclimatizing in Dingboche, we head towards another beautiful stop, Lobuche. The journey starts with a climb to the ridge behind Periche until the tea houses at Dughla followed by a steep ascent to the terminal moraine of Khumbu Glacier. You will encounter a series of stone monuments made in the memories of climbers who couldn’t make it back home. We will reach the memorial of Scott Fisher and 10 times Everest summiteer Babu Chhiri Sherpa who remained in the mountains.

After walking for almost 6-7 hours on rugged terrain we reach Lobuche, a small settlement of Sherpas. It is the final village with lodges on this trail to Nuptse. We take a day’s rest at Lobuche and enjoy the day with short excursions to view the beautiful mountains in the outskirts. Great Peaks like Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori, and Mahalangur Himal are clearly seen during the trek on this trail. With the end of the Khumbu Glacier, Mt Nuptse lies towards the right but Everest is yet to be seen.

The air gradually becomes thinner and there can be high chances of altitude sickness so we recommend you to keep communicating with your sherpa guide all the time about how you are feeling.

In cases as such, we would like to notify you that except for the total number of days in the itinerary section, expenses of other extra days shall be borne by the client himself/herself. However, 8K Expeditions will make necessary arrangements for the accommodation of porters and guides. If you wish to make alternative arrangements such as a helicopter flight to avoid flight delays, we can arrange it at a nominal extra charge.

Also, 8K Expeditions shall not be liable for any compensation for losses due to missed International Flights but we will surely help to make necessary arrangements to minimize your loss. To avoid missing flights, we suggest keeping some flexible time frames before trip departure and after trip departure.
